Missing, Limited or Changed: What Decides Where an AI Companion Works

Privacy & protection

One companion app can be complete in a single country, stripped of its adult mode in another and absent from a third. The cause is seldom random. Four separate forces shape what reaches you, and each one leaves its own trace.

We may earn a commission from links on this page. It never changes a rating.

If your companion vanishes or changes without explanation, the first step is working out which of four forces is behind it. The remedy depends on the answer, and sometimes there is no remedy at all.

Four forces, four fingerprints

Four forces that limit AI companion apps by country: regulators, age-check laws, app stores and payment processors

Every force leaves a pattern you can learn to spot.

1. Regulators

Privacy and consumer authorities can direct a service to stop handling the data of people in their jurisdiction. Italy supplies the clearest example. Its data protection authority ordered Replika in February 2023 to stop processing Italian users' data because of risks to children, then fined the operator €5 million in 2025. An order of this kind can take an app offline in one country while everything carries on elsewhere.

Fingerprint: the entire service goes dark in one country, frequently with an explanatory notice.

2. Age-check laws

Since July 2025 the UK's Online Safety Act has obliged services carrying pornographic content to use effective age checks, and that includes AI tools that generate such material. In the US, a number of states have passed comparable laws for adult websites, and the Supreme Court upheld this approach in 2025. Operators react in different ways: some build a verification step, others turn off adult features, or the whole product, wherever the law bites. For a comparison of the methods, see age verification on AI companion apps.

Canada has no such law in force at the federal level yet. Bill S-209, which would require age verification or age estimation before pornographic material can be accessed online, passed the Senate in April 2026 and was at second reading in the House of Commons as of late September 2026. A bill is only a proposal until it is passed and in force, so watch its progress rather than treating it as settled.

Fingerprint: adult content missing, or a new age check, in particular countries or states.

3. App stores

Apple and Google both limit sexual content worldwide, and both layer local rules on top, country by country. A developer may skip a national store to avoid trouble with a regulator, and a store may remove an app after a complaint. The same service in a browser is usually untouched; browser or app store explains the difference.

Fingerprint: the app cannot be found in your store, yet the website loads normally.

4. Payment processors

Card networks and payment firms write their own rules about adult material. In July 2025, following a campaign directed at payment providers, Steam delisted hundreds of adult games and itch.io hid adult content, each pointing to its payment partners. Companion apps face identical pressure. The rules themselves seldom vary by country, though the payment methods on offer frequently do.

Fingerprint: a feature or plan vanishes for every user, or one payment method stops being accepted.

What you can do

  • Use the website. It sidesteps store restrictions and tends to be the fuller version.
  • Read the company's help pages and social accounts. Operators normally say something about regional limits, even if only briefly.
  • Pick an alternative that operates lawfully in Canada. This is the one route that leaves your consumer and privacy protections whole.
  • Weigh the VPN option carefully. It may restore access, but it can breach the terms of service, cause payments to fail or cost more, and subject you to another country's refund and privacy rules. Some countries restrict VPNs themselves.

Prepare before it happens

Restrictions rarely come with much notice. The habits that guard against a shutdown apply here as well: save your character and the exchanges you love, and think twice before paying far ahead for an app whose standing in your country is unclear. The checklist lives in when your AI companion changes overnight.

Frequently asked questions

Why is an AI girlfriend app not available for download where I live?

Three explanations cover most cases: the developer never listed it in your country's store, the store pulled it to comply with local rules, or a regulator ordered it restricted. Even when the store listing is missing, the website often still works.

Is it legal to use a VPN to reach a restricted AI companion?

In most countries a VPN is lawful to use. Even so, it can put you in breach of the app's terms, alter the prices and payment methods you are offered, and leave you outside your own country's consumer and privacy protections. A few countries restrict VPNs outright.

Why did my companion suddenly lose its adult content?

The usual suspects are a new age-check law, a payment processor tightening its rules, or a change in app store policy. Changes are often rolled out region by region, which explains why someone in another country may still have the feature.
