Building a Companion Character: Which Settings Count and Which Do Not

Choosing an app

The typical user lingers twenty minutes on the face and half a minute on the fields that decide whether the character holds interest a month on. The time should be split the other way.

We may earn a commission from links on this page. It never changes a rating.

Builders are where apps put on their flashiest show, and where most users fall into the same trap: polishing what is cosmetic and skipping what bears the weight.

The ranking below tracks how well each field predicts whether the character will still appeal to you at the six-week mark.

What happens to your choices

Whatever you pick is converted to text and merged into the description that precedes every model turn. We called this the character sheet in what is actually running inside these apps.

The effect is simple. Fields that generate vivid, particular wording change how the chat reads; fields that generate a label barely register. "Hair: auburn" adds one word to the sheet. A couple of sentences about the way she deflects praise will colour every reply that follows.

The fields, ranked

1. Way of speaking

This field carries the most leverage of any in the builder, and it is the one people most often skip.

"Friendly" tells the model nothing, as it describes almost anybody. Specifics do the work: sentence length, whether she answers a question with one of her own, her reaction to a lull, her habit when she disagrees, use of your first name.

Compare this:

Warm and playful.

with this:

Short sentences. Jokes at your expense rather than handing out compliments. Asks something back roughly every other reply. Disagreement is stated outright, with no softening afterward.

The second one gives you a distinct character from the first message, because the model carries on whatever pattern it is shown.

2. Off-limits behaviour

When a builder includes it, this is the most neglected field, and it prevents the largest share of disappointment. Useful entries: no pet names, no asking about your job, never leaving the role to announce she is an AI, no stream of apologies.

Such limits lack glamour, but they stop a character from drifting into the generic voice shared by every other companion.

3. A backstory with particulars

Skip "enjoys music" and write "strums a cheap guitar and only knows four chords." A concrete detail gives the model something to hold, and it resurfaces naturally in chat, whereas a vague one yields vague prose.

A handful of such details is worth more than a page of adjectives.

4. Your history together

Several builders ask how the two of you met. That answer sets the register for everything else: "just met" and "together for years" lead to very different talk from an identical personality.

5. Looks

Last, on purpose. Looks feed the generated pictures, and since the image model rebuilds the character from a description each time, they count for pictures and hardly touch the chat.

If images are your goal, spend the time here. If you are after conversation, three tags will do.

How specific apps handle it

Camsoda AI walks you through six steps: appearance, personality, voice, backstory, how she addresses you, and the topics she should steer clear of. That final step is uncommon in this market, and it is precisely the field ranked second above.

Secret Desires creates looks, voice and personality in one pass and offers a community gallery of ready-made characters as a starting point. Kupid AI handles appearance and personality in both realistic and anime styles.

Each of the three lands between 3.5 and 4.5 in our ranking, and the builder is a genuine contributor to that range, not a line on a feature list.

Begin with a preset

It sounds backwards, yet it works: a carefully written preset usually beats a first-try custom character, because someone already put in the effort on the speaking-style text that you skipped.

The efficient path is to choose the preset nearest to your taste, use it for a few days, and then rewrite the two or three fields that bother you. After a real conversation you will write much better restrictions than you could beforehand.

Editing is upkeep, not a sign of failure

The builder capability worth most is being able to edit later. When a character has gone flat, the usual cause is a description written by someone who had never talked to her, which was you, an hour before.

When the novelty fades, sharpening the speaking style and adding two restrictions accomplishes more than moving to another app, and it is free. Confirm before subscribing that the app permits this: a builder that locks after setup turns every letdown into a decision to start from scratch.

Frequently asked questions

Which field has the biggest effect?

Speaking style, by a wide margin. Appearance is rebuilt for every image anyway, but speaking style is read by the model with every message.

Is it possible to edit a character once it is made?

Usually, and editing is the most valuable upkeep you can do. Before investing an hour in a character, find out whether the app locks it after setup.

Are custom characters better than premade ones?

Often not. Presets tend to be written with more care, and a good one beats a thin custom build. The quickest route is usually to begin with a preset and tweak it.
