Compare the pricing pages of eight companion apps and you will meet the same dozen phrases again and again. Behind them sit very different products. Every phrase is defensible as written, yet each one covers a gap wide enough to make or break your experience. This guide goes through the phrases one at a time.
Memory
At the thin end, "memory" is a handful of facts, about six, pasted into the prompt of each message. At the thick end it is saved facts, periodic summaries and a search over months of history. Both deserve the label. One gives you a pleasant first week; the other still feels attentive in the fourth month. The internals are explained in how AI companion memory works.
Ask: Can I open the memory and change what is in it? An app with a visible memory screen is showing you that real, structured storage exists. Kupid AI lists memory across sessions, and Nomi is designed around it, which accounts for its conversation score in our ranking.
Unlimited messages
This can mean text with no cap at all, text with a hidden rate limit, or text with no cap on one plan while everything else is metered on all plans. Users tend to misread it because text is not what costs these companies money; pictures and audio do, so the counters attach to those.
Ask: Unlimited which things, and what still draws down credits?
Voice
Sometimes it means the character's written reply is turned into a recording. Sometimes it means a live phone-style exchange in which you can cut in. The first is inexpensive and everywhere. The second is pricier, tends to live on higher plans, and depends on response time; wait three seconds for each answer and the spell breaks.
Ask: Is this a recording or a live call, and how long is the pause?
Uncensored, no filters
The honest reading is "more relaxed than mainstream apps", occasionally "much more relaxed". It is never "none", because every operator blocks the same set of illegal material and card networks enforce it. See content filters.
Ask: Where exactly is the boundary, and was it moved recently?
Custom characters
The range runs from picking one of four hair colours and three personality presets to a staged builder covering appearance, voice, history, manner of speaking and off-limits topics. The richer the builder, the longer the app tends to hold your interest, since a character you designed can be redesigned once it gets stale. Camsoda AI centres on a six-step builder, and that is a genuine difference in the product.
Ask: Can I change my character later, or only at creation?
AI image generation
This is either a new face at every request or one character who stays recognizable across dozens of images. Keeping the face steady is the real contest, and a pricing page can never show it.
Ask: If I request four images of her in four places, is it still her?
Relationship that grows with you
Often this is a level counter that rises as you chat. Occasionally it means the character's stored history really does change what it says. Progress bars are cheap to build and easy to confuse with depth.
Ask: What, in plain words, is different once I reach level five?
Free tier
Every app we follow offers one. Some are usable for months; some are a three-day trailer. What free tiers really include sorts them out.
Ask: When I hit the limit, do I get a daily allowance or an upgrade prompt?
Why the list tells you so little
Each bullet names a category, and what matters is how that category is built. This is why feature tables in this market are nearly worthless and why we test the way we do: two weeks on a paid account shows where on each scale an app actually falls.
If you have only ten minutes, use two rules of thumb. Prefer the app that lists fewer features in more depth, because a long list in this category usually signals thin implementation. And prefer the app that lets you look inside, through a memory screen, an editable character or a visible credit balance. A company that shows its workings almost always has workings worth showing.
