We track eight apps, and every one advertises a free plan. That fact says very little by itself, because "free" stands for two quite different products.
A working product versus a sampler
The restricted-but-genuine kind. There is no deadline. Text chat and memory both function, and the limits apply to media and to the pace at which you can send messages. You could remain on it for months and get a fair picture of the app.
The sampler. After a few messages, or a few days, you hit a wall. Its purpose is to display the interface, not to deliver the product. Any verdict you form on memory or consistency is a guess, since neither can be seen in a single day.
A ten-minute experiment separates the two. Use the app until a limit appears, then read the message on the wall. If it refers to a daily allowance, you have the first kind. If it says you must upgrade to go on, you have the second.
Why certain things are rationed
The same features get restricted everywhere because the same costs sit behind them.
| Feature | How the free plan treats it |
|---|---|
| Images | Capped every time, usually tightly, because each picture costs the operator money |
| Voice | Counted by minutes or messages, and often the first feature to go |
| Video | In practice reserved for paying users, where it exists at all |
| Number of messages | Limited by total or by speed, but with much more room than media gets |
| Memory depth | Occasionally shallower on free plans |
The final row is the catch. Memory is the quality that matters most, and a free plan can make an app look worse at it than it really is.
Free plans that justify your time
Of the apps we test, Sweetdream has the free plan that most resembles a real product rather than a preview. That is part of why it holds second place in our ranking with a 4.5, even though its US$10.00 paid plan is the lowest-priced in the group.
Replika also merits an unpaid fortnight, for another reason. Its free version is the archetypal experience of this category, so if it does nothing for you, the more expensive apps probably will not change that.
Kupid AI shows free chat as soon as you register, so it offers a low-cost way to learn whether its character builder appeals to you.
A sensible way to test
- Begin with talk only. Skip images entirely. Otherwise you will exhaust the allowance and still know nothing about the quality of the writing.
- Plant one true detail. On the first day, mention something real about yourself, then bring it up again on the third. That one check is worth more than the complete feature list.
- Spend the media allowance last, all at once. You then see the output at its best, not a single picture per day.
When the question changes
Once you have chosen an app, the free plan is irrelevant and the renewal price is what counts. That is a different calculation, which what AI girlfriend apps cost works through.
