These are the monthly prices the apps we follow publish, in US dollars:
| App | Advertised monthly price | Free version |
|---|---|---|
| Sweetdream | US$10.00 | Yes |
| Candy AI | US$12.99 | Yes |
| Nomi | US$15.99 | Yes |
| Replika | US$19.99 | Yes |
Each figure comes straight from a pricing page. Four things commonly get added on top.
1. A starter rate that is not the real rate
What appears at checkout is often a discount for the first billing period, with renewal at the regular price. Nothing improper is going on, and nothing is concealed. It is just that the moment you compare apps is the moment each one shows you the lowest amount it will ever charge.
Your defence is to compare renewal prices only, and to note the renewal date in a calendar the day you sign up.
2. Credits layered over the plan
This is the widest gap between what people expect and what they pay. In several apps the subscription covers conversation, while images or voice draw from a separate balance. A US$12 plan combined with a heavy picture habit can cost far more than a US$20 plan with media included.
Before paying, do not ask whether an app can generate images, since all of them can. Ask whether those images come with the plan or come out of a balance. Candy AI bundles chat, images and voice into a single subscription, and that, not any one standout feature, is why it heads our ranking.
3. The feature you wanted sits a tier higher
Voice calls, longer memory, quicker replies and video are typical tier gates. The advertised price belongs to the entry tier, and the thing that attracted you may not be part of it.
Find the tier table, locate the exact feature you came for and price that tier. If an app publishes no tier table, regard the headline price as a minimum rather than a quote.
4. Annual billing: cheaper, with a catch
A yearly plan usually saves 30 to 50 per cent against paying monthly. It also ties you to a category in which the product can shift beneath you: models are replaced, filters are retuned, and the character you liked in March may differ from the one you have in September.
The order that costs least is monthly first, annual only after a month you actually enjoyed. Monthly, annual or credits works through the trade-off.
The cheapest real entry point
At US$10.00, Sweetdream carries the lowest advertised price of the apps we test, and it also has the free version we rate highest. That makes it the cheapest honest way into the category, not merely the lowest number.
The costliest error is not choosing the wrong app. It is paying for a year of one you used for four days. Everything else in this article is small change beside that, and the rest of the arithmetic is in the hidden costs guide.
