Introductory offers
Many of these apps promote a reduced price for the first month. It is more prudent to plan around the renewal price, which is frequently double and is often stated in small print beneath the plan options rather than on the main button.
| Pricing practice | How it appears | What to budget for instead |
|---|---|---|
| Introductory discount | "US$6.99 for your first month" | The renewal price |
| Additional tokens | A subscription plus image packages | The subscription plus a realistic media allowance |
| Annual plan at "50% off" | Economical only for a full-year user | Monthly billing until the app has proven itself |
| Free version | A limited number of messages before a paywall | Suitable for testing chat, not images |
Tokens as an added cost
A subscription generally covers conversation. Images, voice minutes and video are frequently billed separately, which is how a US$12 month can become a US$30 month. Candy AI includes more of these features in its plan than most competitors. Token-based pricing is not inherently worse value, but it does mean apps cannot be compared on subscription price alone.
A caution on annual plans
This category evolves from one quarter to the next. A year at half price represents good value only if the app remains your preferred choice twelve months later. We would not recommend an annual commitment to any app in the current ranking.
Estimating your actual cost
- Identify the renewal price rather than the introductory price.
- Determine whether images and voice are included in the plan or charged in tokens.
- Use the free version for one week and record what you actually use. Sweetdream is the app whose free week provides enough information.
- Multiply your expected media use by the per-use rate and add the renewal price.
In our testing, typical use falls between US$10 and US$20 per month. Daily image generation can raise that above US$30.
An illustration
Consider a US$12.99 plan that includes 100 image tokens, where each image requires four tokens and a busy week produces 40 images. The result is a monthly cost of roughly US$25 for an app advertised at about US$13, which is why advertised price alone does not determine our ranking.
