A chatbot becomes a companion when it remembers you. Yet no pricing page can show whether it does, because every app advertises the same word. Only time settles it: talk for a fortnight and note what comes back.
The test setup
I used each app every day for two weeks, always on a paid plan, using the method laid out in our testing approach. In the first days I mentioned a few small, specific things (a name, an upcoming outing, a small worry) and never brought them up again. During the second week I recorded whether the character raised them unprompted, recalled them when asked, got them wrong, or had lost them entirely.
The reasons behind these results (context limits, stored facts and summaries) are explained in how AI companion memory works.
What we found

Memory tiers from the fortnight of testing; apps within a tier run A to Z.
| App | Observed across two weeks | Tier |
|---|---|---|
| Nomi | A minor detail from day two returned in week two, unprompted and in context | Best |
| Camsoda AI | Memory is stored per character, so every companion has a separate history | Strong |
| Secret Desires | Carried its memory from one session to the next, with long scenes staying coherent | Strong |
| Candy AI | Dependable for about seven days; after that, earlier details slipped | Medium |
| Sweetdream | Shorter memory than Nomi, surfacing a week-old detail only now and then | Medium |
| Replika | Retained names and routines beyond a week, yet lost the fine points | Medium |
| Kupid AI | Thinner than the leading apps | Weak |
| Joi | Almost nothing survived between sessions | Weak |
Why the top apps stand out
Nomi treats remembering as its core feature. During my test it delivered what the others merely advertise, recalling a passing remark I had made once, exactly when it became relevant. Characters in group chats each kept their own memories too. The trade-offs are weaker images and a price above most of the field.
Camsoda AI attaches memory to the individual character instead of the account. If you create several companions, every one has its own record, so the effort of shaping a character is still there next time.
Secret Desires kept its thread through lengthy roleplay scenes. A point to weigh first: in 2025 the platform left a large set of user-generated images exposed, as described in the AI companion data breaches roundup.
Cases where memory is a lesser concern
Someone who mainly wants pictures, voice and brief chats can let memory take a back seat. Candy AI earned our overall pick by combining chat, images and voice in one plan. For a no-cost trial, Sweetdream offers the free tier that is easiest to live with, and casual use is well within what its memory handles.
Making any app remember more
- Record the essentials in the app's memory or notes field.
- Keep the profile for temperament, and leave facts out of it.
- Begin a new chat when a long one wanders. Memories follow you; bad habits stay behind. See why companions drift in personality.
- Start any session after a break with a recap of two lines.
- Keep a personal copy of what matters, in case the app changes, as explained in moving between companion apps.
An app's memory can change with any model update, so read these results as a snapshot of our test period. Every review states when that app was tested.
